Best Countries in Africa at the Edge of the Extraordinary
Written by
Ker & Downey® Africa
Ask someone to name the best countries in Africa and you’ll usually hear the same destinations: Kenya, Botswana, South Africa and Tanzania. They’re obvious choices for good reason.
But after years of designing journeys across the continent, we’ve learnt that it’s often the regions within the icons that travelers remember most.
It’s the afternoon when the fog rolls over Namibia’s Skeleton Coast and the Atlantic simply disappears. The silence of the Karoo after sunset. Watching elephants weave between ancient baobabs in Ruaha without another vehicle in sight. Standing on Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, where the horizon blurs into the sky and it’s almost impossible to judge distance.
These are the landscapes that change the pace of a journey. They remind you just how vast, wild and wonderfully unpredictable Africa can be.
If you’re looking for the best countries in Africa, these are the places we’d encourage you to look beyond the obvious.
Namibia | Skeleton Coast
Few places illustrate Africa’s extremes quite like the Skeleton Coast. Here, the Atlantic collides with the Namib Desert in a landscape shaped by wind, fog and time. Shipwrecks slowly disappear beneath shifting sands, while desert-adapted elephants and lions survive against extraordinary odds.
Seeing it from the air is unforgettable. Only then do you appreciate just how remote this coastline really is.
Kenya | Chyulu Hills
Many travelers head straight for the Maasai Mara, but the Chyulu Hills reveal a very different side of Kenya.
Rolling volcanic hills, ancient lava tubes and sweeping views towards Kilimanjaro create a landscape that feels both peaceful and dramatic. Add horseback safaris, helicopter excursions and a handful of exceptional camps, and it’s easy to understand why this remains one of Kenya’s most rewarding hidden corners.
Tanzania | Ruaha National Park
Ruaha has a rhythm all of its own. Its baobab-studded valleys support one of East Africa’s largest elephant populations, along with impressive numbers of lion, leopard and wild dog. Yet even in peak season, you’ll often spend hours exploring without encountering another safari vehicle.
For travelers who value space as much as wildlife, Ruaha is difficult to beat.

Zambia | Liuwa Plain
Liuwa Plain isn’t about chasing wildlife sightings. It’s about experiencing one of Africa’s last truly wild places. The skies seem impossibly large, dramatic storms roll across the horizon for miles, and each evening the vast plains are set ablaze by spectacular sunsets that feel as though they stretch on forever. During the green season, thousands of wildebeest move across the landscape with remarkably few other visitors around.
It’s the kind of place that quietly stays with you.
Botswana | Makgadikgadi Salt Pans
The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans challenge your sense of scale.
During the dry season, the ancient lakebed stretches towards the horizon in every direction. There’s very little to interrupt the view, which is exactly what makes it so memorable.
Spend an evening beneath the stars, meet the resident meerkats or cross the pans by quad bike, and you’ll quickly understand why this landscape feels unlike anywhere else in Botswana.
Kenya | Lake Nakuru
Lake Nakuru offers a very different perspective on Kenya’s landscapes. Framed by acacia woodland and the dramatic escarpments of the Great Rift Valley, the alkaline lake has long been famous for its flamingos, although the spectacle shifts with water levels and seasonal conditions. Today, it’s equally celebrated as one of Kenya’s best places to see both black and white rhino, along with Rothschild’s giraffe, leopard and an impressive diversity of birdlife.
South Africa | The Karoo
The Karoo reminds us that extraordinary landscapes don’t always come with abundant wildlife. Here, the luxury lies in slowing down. Endless horizons, crisp night skies and complete stillness encourage you to pause for a little longer than you planned. It’s one of South Africa’s most underrated regions and one we believe deserves far more attention.
Botswana | The Okavango Delta from above
The Okavango Delta is extraordinary from the ground, but from the air, its true scale becomes clear.
Flying by helicopter reveals a network of winding channels, islands and floodplains that simply can’t be appreciated any other way. It’s a perspective that transforms your understanding of one of Africa’s greatest wildernesses.
Tanzania | Nyerere National Park
Nyerere offers a completely different safari experience. Instead of spending every day in a vehicle, you can explore the Rufiji River by boat, walk with expert guides or even spend a night fly camping beneath the stars. It feels immersive, adventurous and wonderfully connected to the landscape.

Namibia | Sossusvlei & Deadvlei
You may have seen photographs of Sossusvlei before you arrive, but nothing quite prepares you for standing beneath dunes that rise more than 300 metres above the desert floor.
Arrive early, before the heat settles in, and Deadvlei feels almost silent. The contrast between the white clay pan, blackened camel thorn trees and deep red dunes is one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes for good reason.
The best countries in Africa are the ones that surprise you
The destinations above aren’t necessarily the most famous, but they are among the most memorable.
At Ker & Downey® Africa, we believe the most rewarding journeys are built around contrast. A few nights in a celebrated national park, followed by somewhere quieter. An iconic safari, balanced by a landscape few travelers ever experience. Those unexpected moments often become the stories people tell for years afterwards.
Whether you’re drawn to Namibia’s desert coast, Botswana’s remote salt pans or the quiet beauty of South Africa’s Karoo, we’ll help you discover a side of Africa that feels deeply personal – and far beyond the expected.
