Responsible Travel

Trees for Africa in collaboration with Greenpop

Reduce your carbon footprint when you travel

It’s no secret that travel looks a little different these days. The global travel bans in 2020 brought to light the negative impact of air travel on the environment by revealing the obvious decrease in CO2 emissions around the world. This has encouraged travelers, and travel companies alike, to face the realities of frequent international air travel and its effect on the planet and reimagine how we will travel in the future.

At Ker & Downey® Africa, we are committed to responsible travel and strive to ensure the preservation and protection of the biodiversity and cultures of the destinations and regions we serve. We are constantly researching ways to expand our responsible travel offering to provide you with simple and sustainable solutions to leave a positive legacy in Africa.

Introducing Trees for Africa – our tree-planting carbon reducing scheme in collaboration with Greenpop that aims to restore forests in Sub Saharan Africa in order to soak up CO2 generated by air travel to Africa.

About Greenpop

Greenpop is an award-winning forest restoration and urban greening non-profit organization that works to restore ecosystems and empower environmental stewards across Sub-Saharan Africa. Founded in 2010 by social activist and environmentalist Misha Teasdale, his partner Lauren Teasdale and friend Jeremy Hewit, Greenpop had one simple goal: to plant 1,000 trees in 1 month. Today, Greenpop has planted more than 134,000 trees across South Africa, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania.

Greenpop also hosts a range of environmental education, reforestation and urban tree planting projects, as well as green festivals that aim to restore ecosystems, empower environmental stewards, popularise conservation and make it fun!

Carbon reducing through forest restoration

According to Greenpop, forest restoration is one of the most effective strategies to fight climate change. In fact, one tree can absorb 49 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. Collectively, this can create a hugely positive impact on the negative effects of flying.

In Africa, the urban population is predicted to more than double between 2000 and 2030 and urban space is believed to increase by more than 700%. As this happens, more and more ecosystems, and the essential natural assets that they provide, will come under threat.

It is more important than ever to work together to protect these natural spaces and incorporate them into urban landscapes. It is only by conserving and restoring these threatened ecosystems that we can ensure a sustainable future for Africa.

About Trees for Africa

Ker & Downey® Africa has become a pledge partner with Greenpop in an effort to further our responsible travel offering and each trip booked with us will include an 8 USD donation to fund the planting of one tree in Sub-Saharan Africa.

For a single donation, Greenpop will plant a tree in one of their forest restoration projects in your name. This initiative will help to reduce your carbon footprint and single-handedly contribute to creating a sustainable future for Africa. You will also receive a personalised digital TREE CERTIFICATE as well as GPS coordinates of where your trees have been planted.

Get involved

If you are traveling to South Africa and want to get your hands dirty, Ker & Downey® Africa’s LuxVenture® Designers can arrange a planting day for you during your trip. Greenpop’s Fynbos for the Future programme aims to plant water-wise Fynbos gardens at under-resourced schools and inspire future green heroes.
