Great Wildebeest Migration

Guide to the Great Wildebeest Migration in November

JAN   FEB   MAR   APR   MAY   JUN   JUL   AUG   SEP   OCT   NOV   DEC

Picking up the pace and heading south

By November, most of the wildebeest, zebra and antelope that make up the massive herd have left the Mara and are moving with more urgency towards the Southern Serengeti where the rains have begun to fall. Columns of animals can be seen stretching from Lobo to the central Seronera region and eastern side of the Serengeti.

Though November may be a bit cooler and come with a bit of rain, it’s a great time to see the animals in the Serengeti. They are moving at a quicker pace in order to reach the southern plains as the first grass roots begin to sprout.

Definitely for the more adventurous (and experienced horse rider) this is a truly remarkable way to enjoy spectacular game viewing as you gallop alongside the herds, or walk amongst them as they graze. With luxury mobile camps set up along the way of your safari, evenings bring comfort and respite as you recharge for your next day in the saddle.

Where to stay

Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp

Located in its own private 7608 hectare conservancy with expansive views over the Mara plains, the award-winning Cottar’s 1920’s Safari Camp exudes the original spirit and essence of the African safari experience through utmost luxury and elegance. It’s hallmark position places it within the path of the great wildebeest migration between June and November, and can be witnessed first-hand with professionally guided 4×4 game drives, or walking safaris with world-class guides leading the way.

Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp

As the name suggests, Elewana’s Serengeti Migration Camp is a great place to witness the spectacle. Remotely tucked away among rocky outcrops, the camp comprises 20 luxurious elevated tents that blend seamlessly into the environment. Herds typically pass through the vicinity from August through to November and the camp has become synonymous over the years with high-action, low-impact game viewing in a truly pristine environment.

Legendary Serengeti Mobile Camp

From July through to November, Legendary Serengeti Mobile Camp is located in the northern Serengeti following the herds of the great wildebeest migration. Traditional fold-away canvas safari tents and open-air sitting areas provide uninterrupted views over the savannah plains of the Serengeti, offering guests outstanding views. Game drives and guided walks take you close to the action and in December, the camp packs up and heads south to catch the wonders of the calving season once again (December to April).
