The river crossings begin
By June, the group has gathered in a mega-herd on the southern banks for the Grumeti River, where ravenous crocodiles gather under the murky pools, awaiting a wildebeest and zebra banquet. Rutting season (mating season) is also underway and the surge of testosterone in males can be heard through reverberating grunts and bellows as they round up their chosen ladies.
The Grumeti River crossings can start early in the month, but tend to intensify around the middle of June, with huge herds splashing through the channels and pools of the croc-infested waters.
Experiences
Sundowners at a Waterhole
Often referred to as ‘happy hour’ in the African bush, sundowners generally round off afternoon game drives and this daily ritual becomes a common thread throughout your safari. As the light slowly starts to fade at sunset, there is no better to enjoy a refreshing sundowner drink than at a waterhole, where a wide variety of game congregate in search of a refreshing drink themselves. Because the herds of the migration are on a mission themselves to seek greener pastures and fresh water, there’s a good chance you will encounter some migratory animals here too.
