Visit Morocco on a Luxury Safari FAQs

Where is Morocco located?

Bordering the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, the North African country of Morocco covers an area of 446,550 square kilometers. To the east, behind the High Atlas mountain range, is Algeria, and to the south, Western Sahara. Morocco boasts sweeping Sahara dunes, palm-fringed desert oases, towering peaks of the High Atlas mountain range, and 1835km of rugged coastline.

Is Morocco good for safaris?

Yes, Morocco is an excellent destination for luxury safaris, offering a wonderful selection of experiences. Luxury safaris in Morocco typically focus on exploring the country’s diverse landscapes and rich cultures rather than on traditional game drives found in countries in East and Southern Africa. When you book a luxury Morocco safari with Ker & Downey Africa, you will enjoy private safari experiences coupled with exceptional world-class accommodations. Enjoy exclusive experiences such as hot air balloon rides over the Sahara Desert, private camel treks to remote oases, and gourmet dining experiences featuring traditional Moroccan cuisine prepared by expert chefs. Contact our safari specialists and let us help craft a bespoke, private safari experience in this magical place.

What type of wildlife will I see?

This biodiverse destination is home to 40 unique ecosystems and an array of wildlife, from elusive leopards and Barbary macaques in the rugged mountain landscapes to charmed cobras in the heart of Marrakech. Calling out to bird enthusiasts, Morocco is home to 210 species of birds, including soaring eagles and desert falcons.

When is the best time to visit Morroco on a luxury safari, and why?

Deciding when to travel to Morocco can be tricky as it depends on what you would like to see and do. Travel during the winter months to ski on the slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, or visit the coast during the sweltering summer months. Our favorite time to travel to Morocco is between the months of February to May and September to December. The pleasant weather is perfect for exploring the country’s ancient cities, desert trekking and hiking.

When is the high season?

Peak season runs between the months of February to May and September to December. However, during the peak summer months, the weather can get uncomfortably hot, especially in the cities. We recommend heading to the coast to enjoy the cool ocean breeze while soaking up the sun during the high season.

When is the low season?

During the winter months between December and January, heavy snow falls on the peaks of the High Atlas Mountains. Feel like a ski holiday? No problem, you can take to the slopes 80-kms south of Marrakech in Oukaimeden. Winter in the cities is generally mild, but temperatures can drop dramatically at night, leaving a light dust of snow on the ground.

When is the best weather?

The best weather in Morocco is during spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) when the temperatures are moderate and the weather is dry.

What are some of the best destinations to visit on a luxury safari in Morocco?

Morocco boasts a fascinating array of destinations to explore on a luxury safari; however, highlights include:

The Atlas Mountains
The snow-capped Atlas Mountains in Morocco form a majestic range stretching across the country’s backbone, spanning over 2,500 kilometers. Towering peaks, lush valleys, and Berber villages dot the landscape, offering breathtaking scenery and outdoor adventures. These rugged mountains are a haven for trekkers, nature enthusiasts, and cultural explorers alike.

The Sahara Desert
The Sahara offers the ultimate desert experience, with stunning sand dunes that stretch as far as the eye can see. A wide range of desert safari experiences are available, including camel tours, horse riding, hiking, and quad biking.

Marrakech
No visit to Morocco would be complete without exploring the vibrant city of Marrakech, including its ancient old town. Here, you’ll find plenty of local boutiques and eateries serving up delicious local Moroccan cuisine. Browse the narrow alleys of the bustling Medina, filled with piles of exotic spices and local delicacies and crafts, then enjoy a cooking class and learn how to cook some of Morocco’s most delicious dishes. Cap off your visit with a hot air balloon trip over this striking city for an incredible vacation experience.

Casablanca
Located along Morocco’s Atlantic coastline, this bustling metropolis of Casablanca offers ancient charm seamlessly blended with modern-day life. Explore the city’s top sites and attractions, many of which are steeped in history, including the Mosque Hasan II, or stroll the Medina. The city’s elegant seaside resorts offer the ideal place to relax, unwind, and soak up the sun, as well as enjoy a wide range of watersports.

What is Moroccan cuisine like?

Moroccan cuisine is a delightful fusion of flavor profiles blending traditional Arab, Berber, Moorish, and Mediterranean flavors. Traditional dishes are characterized by aromatic spices, diverse ingredients, and traditional cooking methods, including the tagine, a Moroccan cooking vessel that results in deliciously tender and aromatic slow-cooked stews.
