Perfectly positioned in a remote region of the northern Serengeti is a luxury tented safari camp par excellence. The eco-conscious Lemala Kuria Hills, named after the ancestral home of the local Kuria tribe, offers guests year-round game viewing and front row seats to the passing Wildebeest herds as they move to the Mara and back. Luanna Do Coutto, Managing Director of Ker & Downey® Africa Brazil DMC, shares her first hand experience of the camp and why it rates for a luxury safari experience in the Serengeti.
Lemala Kuria Hills is located in the northern reaches of the Serengeti and within close proximity to the famous Mara River that borders Kenya’s renowned Maasai Mara. The region offers a world-class game viewing year round and hosts the sought-after wildebeest migration between the months of July and October.
Lemala Kuria Hills is easily accessible from Kogatende airstrip, a short 45-minute drive away. Flights to and from the Kogatende airstrip are available from airstrips within the Serengeti and Arusha, as well as from Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. These flights are operated by light aircraft so prepared, there might be multiple stops before you reach your final destination.
Lemala Kuria Hills was designed to have the smallest possible ecological impact without compromising a luxurious experience. The camp was designed and built according to best practices in global sustainable architecture and implements solar energy, low-flow showerheads and tents constructed from recycled steel, glass, sustainable timber and composite decking and canvas.
The camp’s 15 elegant, glass-fronted tented suites are ideally positioned between the striking granite boulders synonymous with Wogakuria Hills – ensuring maximum privacy for discerning travelers and, of course, breathtaking views of the surrounding plains. Each luxury tent is fitted with a private plunge pool, as well as an en-suite bathroom with flush toilet, hot shower, freestanding bathtub plus an incredible outdoor shower.
The camp’s cosy main area is built on the ridge of the largest kopje and comprises a spacious lounge and bar area decked out with elegant chandeliers, as well as indoor and outdoor dining areas. The camp’s outdoor fire pit is a popular spot for sunset drinks or morning coffee. A short walk away, you will find the main swimming pool and Melengali Spa that overlook the bush frequented by buffalo.
During our stay, the team at Lemala Kuria Hills were very attentive and the bartender was always on hand to serve up refreshing drinks.
