Ker & Downey Africa > Journal > Travel Diary – Asilia Dunia Camp
Ker & Downey® Africa’s Personal Travel Advisor, Private Clients, Natasha Langley is no stranger to the tourism industry. After eight years living and working in the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, Natasha relocated to Cape Town and joined the expert B2C team with over 12 years of experience. Natasha has traveled extensively in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique and is a Southern Africa travel expert. Next on her bucket list were the East African meccas of Kenya and Tanzania.
And just recently, she got to tick one of them off.
Natasha was fortunate to visit Tanzania recently and was able to tick Arusha, Ngorongoro, the Tarangire National Park and the world-famous Serengeti off her bucket list, visiting some incredible properties along the way.
Here, she shares her unforgettable experience at the renowned all-female Dunia Camp – proudly part of the esteemed Asilia Africa portfolio of properties.
Dunia Camp is a proudly all-female run lodge situated in the central area of the Serengeti.
Manager, Petronella, explains that women, in general, are quite competitive and feel they have much to prove. She believes that this is a driving force behind her all-female team and motivates them from the moment they wake up, ensuring guests receive more than the usual standard of service Asilia properties are renowned for.
You can feel the warm East African hospitality and the boundless energy from the ladies as soon as you arrive outside this gorgeous wood and canvas lodge. The full team gathered in song to welcome us. After a refreshing drink and a warm towel to wipe away the dust of the day, we were presented with a high quality Maasai beaded water bottle which was ours to keep and take home. This beautiful gesture is a nod to Dunia Camp’s no plastic policy – one of the many shining examples of Asilia’s commitment to sustainability.
Located close to the collection of rocky hills known as the Moru Kopjes, Dunia Camp allows for great lion and leopard sightings right from camp! Here you may see all of the Big Five and, during certain months, even watch the Great Wildebeest Migration right from your verandah!
Located just 45-minutes from the Seronera Airstrip, guests are met by one of the female guides with a picnic and refreshments before a slow game drive back to camp.
There are eight luxury open plan tents including one family tent overlooking the Moru Kopjes and savanna plains. Each tent has a large comfortable bed, its own private veranda with sunken lounge, lovely spacious bathroom with flush toilets, and hot running water. The family tent comprises a king bed and daybed with ensuite bathroom interleading to a twin room section with its own ensuite bathroom. The family unit is located nearest to the main area of the lodge.
Honeymooners typically use rooms eight and one and a bottle of sparkling wine is included with the complimentary romantic sundowner. There are battery charging stations and USB charging points in each tent as well complimentary laundry service, a digital safe, luxurious bathrobe, and toiletries. Wifi can be found throughout the main area and tents. For security there are radios in each tent and room/dining service is available. You will be greeted with a steamy hot beverage of your choice with your game drive wake-up call each morning.
Overall, the property boasts a clean and modern feel with wooden decks under canvas. The main area is separated into a central lounge and bar with the dining area next door. Meals are served at a communal style table for dinner but can be made private per guest’s request.
Breakfast is served on the deck at separate tables and lunch is either a buffet style or packed picnic lunch if out on a full day safari. A bush breakfast is included for all guests during a stay at Dunia Camp. The lodge has a small shop selling various locally made products such as jewellery, art, clothes and small gifts to take home for family or friends.
Morning and afternoon game drives are a real highlight in this game-rich region of the Serengeti. The camp is also perfectly located for hot air balloon safaris, which are followed by a delicious champagne bush breakfast. For those that want to experience the incredible conservation work done in the area, the Moru Rhino project allows for guests to partake in special rhino tracking with a TANAPA ranger at an extra cost. And if you’re a honeymooner at Dunia Camp, expect to be spoiled with a complimentary traditional wedding display.
I love this camp for solo travelers, woman travelers, honeymooners and couples.
The energy and hospitality of the ladies as well as the location with its breathtaking views and abundance of wildlife. Another highlight is the high standard of service Asilia is known for.
