Virunga Lodge

Perched high on a volcanic ridge overlooking the iconic Virunga Volcanoes and the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo, Virunga Lodge holds a special place in African safari history as Rwanda’s first, and most beloved, gorilla lodge. Established in 2004, it blends rugged charm with handcrafted design, featuring ten artisanal bandas (four deluxe and six standard) that open onto sweeping terraces and panoramic views.

Each banda is intimate yet refined, with en-suite bathrooms, private terraces, handwoven rugs, local textiles, and dedicated butler service. The lodge’s heart lies in its communal spaces – an open-plan lounge, elegant dining area, spa and sauna pavilion, a cozy fireside bar, and a conservation-focused “Map Room” honouring Dian Fossey’s legacy with talks by conservation partners.

Days here revolve around guided gorilla and golden monkey treks into the mist-shrouded forests of Volcanoes National Park. Afternoons unwind with spa treatments, lakeside hikes, cultural visits, or reflective moments by the rim of twin lakes.
