Ker & Downey® Africa > Trips > Luxury Treehouse Safari to Botswana LuxVenture®
The safari adventure begins (and ends) in the town of Maun – also known as the gateway to the Okavango Delta. On your safari, you will be transported to 3 iconic destinations in Botswana: Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Khwai Private Reserve, and the Okavango Delta. You will experience a treehouse-style sleep out at the brand new, Duke’s Camp. Your first stop will be at Jack’s Camp located in the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Jack’s Camp recently reopened after an extensive refurbishment and is considered one of the best camps in Botswana. It also happens to be in the path of the second biggest migration of zebra and wildebeest in Africa. The next location is Tuludi Camp in the Khwai Private Reserve, The final camp, Duke’s, opened in mid-2022 and is a permanent camp in the north of the famous Okavango Delta – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stay at Duke’s Camp ends with an overnight stay in a unique Sky Suite – a luxurious platform 4 meters above the ground. This itinerary proudly includes the very best of culture, game viewing, exhilarating activities and unique accommodation.
Are you ready?
On arrival at Maun International Airport, you will enjoy a VIP meet & greet before embarking on a 50-minute light aircraft flight through to a local airstrip in the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. There are very few other flights that arrive or depart from this intimate airstrip, so you are assured of an exclusive arrival. From the airstrip you will enjoy a short 20-minute 4WD scenic game drive into the heart of the Kalahari to Jack’s Camp. This camp is old-world safari glamor at its finest offering a unique safari experience from discovering local artifacts to learning about the region’s rare and rich geology. Upon arrival, you will be awestruck by the breathtaking views across the Salt Pan. After settling into your luxurious tent and helping yourself to a refreshing beverage from the well-stocked drinks chest, you can spend time exploring the renowned Natural History Museum or camp library. Over the next 2 nights you will enjoy a myriad of enriching activities. A highlight will surely be watching the playful colonies of meerkats surrounding the camp and the morning walks with the local Bushmen trackers. You can also spend your downtime relaxing in the swimming pool pavilion.
After your morning game activity and a al carte breakfast at the camp, then take a short transfer back to the local airstrip. From here board a light aircraft flight through to the local airstrip close to your next destination – Tuludi Camp. Upon arrival at the Khwai Private Reserve, you will be collected by the lodge staff and then transfer to Tuludi Camp. For your next 3 nights enjoy the fantastic surroundings with the various game activities that are on offer. Tuludi offers luxury accommodation and each suite has its own private plunge pool. It opened in July 2019 and has over 200 000 hectares of pristine wilderness.
Tuludi Camp, opened in July 2019, occupies a large portion of the 200,000 hectare private reserve. There is a permanent waterhole in front of the lodge which attracts a diverse array of wildlife for you to enjoy. Accommodation comprises seven treehouse-style luxury tented suites with indoor and outdoor showers as well as private plunge pools. There is one larger tent suitable for groups or families that has a bigger private splash pool.
Enjoy armchair game viewing from the comfort of your terrace, enjoying the active waterhole that attracts a diverse selection of game right outside the camp. Activities with your dedicated ranger in this unique ecosystem include walking safaris, seasonal mokoro canoes, 4×4 game drives and seasonal motor boating. The area is renowned for its large concentrations of elephants, buffalo and many predators including lion and leopards.
In the morning, you will enjoy a morning game experience. Thereafter transfer back to the local airstrip before boarding a light aircraft flight to a private concession in the northern Okavango Delta, renowned for its game-rich plains. The brand new and exclusive Duke’s Camp is located on the shores of a permanent lagoon so you are finishing on a high with unparalleled game viewing and extraordinary views between the camp’s indigenous leadwood and ebony trees. As the sun sets, flickering lanterns come alive to guide you along the raised wooden platform to your luxurious tent. Though Duke’s Camp is open all year round, you will only be able to partake in mokoro and boat activities from April to October. Exceptional land-based game viewing occurs all year with large herds of elephants and plains game making their way across the crystalline waters. During the warmer summer months we highly recommend guided bush walks, as well as spending some time enjoying the over 440 bird species that call this region of the Delta home. Night game drives are also on offer, allowing you to view remarkable nocturnal carnivores including serval and caracal. This is the ultimate lodge for this safari to Botswana.
Sister camp to Jack’s Camp, Duke’s camp is one of the newest camps to open in the Okavango Delta set on a vast concession rich in game and natural beauty. 8 luxurious safari tents are pitched on raised wooden decks overlooking the seasonal laoon and floodplains, offering an unforgettable under-canvas adventure. A further 4 tents will be built in March 2023. The main areas at Duke’s include a Persian tea-tent, communal dining tent and comfortable lounge.
Guided bush walks, mokoro safari excursions, twice daily game drives, fishing and sunset boat cruises in the crystal-clear channels of the Delta are on offer. Hot-air ballooning and rock art visits can also be arranged. All the guides have been trained by a top safari expert Ralph Bousfield of Jack’s Camp. Dinner is a formal affair with crystal glasses and antique silverware, so we suggest you bring some more formal attire.
Enjoy a morning game activity followed by a delicious breakfast in the dining room. In the late afternoon, you will be whisked away by private transfer to the Duke’s Camp star bed sky suite. You will arrive at the Sky Suite just in time for a sundowner as the sun sets. Dinner will be served as a delicious picnic with a wide variety of gourmet eats and refreshing alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages of your choice. After dinner, relax around your very own private fireplace before curling up with the warm blankets. Spend the night beneath a canopy of millions of stars blanketing the African sky. This is the epitome of unbridled romance and beauty.
Sleep in a comfortable 4-poster canopy king-size bed, with a private bathroom set on a spacious open platform with your own wooden deck for extensive views of the surrounding wildlife. You’ll have nothing but the sounds of nature and the slight breeze in the giant leadwood trees to lull you to sleep.
There is nothing quite like a sleepout under the African stars. Your afternoon will start off at the unique custom-designed treehouse, Sky Suite. You will then drift off to sleep under the spectacular starry Okavango Delta sky – the perfect combination of luxurious adventure and romance.
Following your last game activity in this incredible safari destination, you will check out and wave goodbye to the friendly and professional staff at Duke’s Camp. Board your scheduled light aircraft flight back after the safari to Botswana, to Maun International Airport for your further onward journey home, armed with unforgettable memories of Africa.
