What are the most famous national parks in Kenya?

+
Kenya is home to several famous national parks. These include:
  • The Maasai Mara National Reserve
The iconic Maasai Mara is located in south west Kenya and is considered one of Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves with breathtaking landscapes and some of the continent’s most majestic animals, including the Big 5. The reserve boasts more than 95 species of animals and over 570 bird species, making it a must for wildlife enthusiasts. A highlight of the reserve is the annual Wildebeest Migration, with the herds passing through the reserve from July to October.
  • Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park is situated in the southern region of Kenya and is renowned for its large African elephant herds. The park also offers visitors thrilling close-up encounters with free-roaming Big 5 species, including black rhinos and cheetahs. Its diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife make it a must-visit destination for a true African safari experience.
  • Tsavo National Park
Tsavo National Park is the largest park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world, offering sweeping vistas and some of Africa’s most incredible wildlife. The park is split into two; Tsavo East National Park, and Tsavo West National Park. Tsavo East boasts dry plains, which the Galana River flows across, while Tsavo West is more mountainous. Both parts of the park offer thrilling wildlife encounters and safari experiences.
  • Nairobi National Park
Nairobi National Park is famous for being the world’s only wildlife reserve located just outside a capital city, offering visitors the opportunity to see lions, giraffes, and rhinos with Nairobi’s striking city skyline in the background. The park is known for its conservation efforts, particularly with the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and its rhino sanctuary, making it a must-visit for those interested in both wildlife and conservation.
  • Meru National Park
Meru National Park is a stunning unspoilt park known for its diverse ecosystems, rugged landscapes that range from dense forests to open savannah, and for being home to the famous Elsa the lioness of Born Free, whose legacy lives on at the park. Meru National Park is also known for its rare wildlife, including the endangered Grevy’s zebra and bongo antelope.
  • Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru is a wildlife haven, known for its vast population of brightly colored pink flamingos that live along its shores. The lake sits at the foot of the Great Rift Valley and is surrounded by bushy grassland that is a sanctuary to an incredible variety of wildlife, including rare black and white rhinos.
  • Samburu National Reserve
Samburu National Reserve is considered a premier wildlife sanctuary in East Africa. The reserve sits on the banks of the picturesque Ewas Ng’iro river and is famous for its abundance of rare species, including Somali ostrich and Grevy zebras. African wild dog sightings are also a popular occurrence as are elephants, with the reserve home to a robust population of around 900.
Kenya’s lesser-known parks like Shimba Hills, Chyulu Hills National Park, Aberdare, and Ruma also offer unique wildlife, stunning landscapes, and a peaceful, crowd-free experience. When you book with us our team of luxury travel consultants will create a bespoke itinerary with experiences in Kenya’s best national parks based on your desired preferences.

When is the best time to visit the Masai Mara National Reserve?

+
The best time to visit the Masai Mara National Reserve is during the Great Wildebeest Migration, which typically occurs from July to October. This is when millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross the Mara River, offering dramatic wildlife sightings.

For year-round wildlife viewing, June to October is ideal, as it’s the dry season, making it easier to spot animals concentrated around waterholes.

November to May is the rainy season, but still offers great game viewing with fewer crowds.
