A barefoot escape with coral dreams

Just a 15-minute boat ride from Unguja, Mnemba rises as a secluded pearl surrounded by a protected coral atoll. This exclusive island lodge is limited to 12 thatched bandas – 10 standard and 1 family banda – nestled into casuarina forest and backed by powder-white sands and crystalline Indian Ocean.

Each banda unfolds barefoot luxury: open-air layouts with canvas blinds, glass-beaded showers, personal beach sala, outdoor loungers, ceiling fans, and natural-hewn décor reflecting local craft. Spacious interiors flow effortlessly onto the beach, blending comfort with simplicity.

Life here moves in oceanic rhythms – two boat dives or snorkel sessions daily from the in-house PADI dive centre; yoga and wellness amid sea breezes; sunset dhow cruises; reef walks; sea kayaking; stand-up paddle-boarding; and seasonal marine wildlife spotting – from turtle nesting to pods of dolphins and migrating whale sharks.

Island conservation is woven into every experience. Guests can join marine-ranger reef nursery visits, turtle-protection walks, and learn about coral restoration and the rare Aders’ duiker. Back on shore, barefoot relaxation mingles with barefoot luxury – sunset cocktails in a beach bar, candlelit dinners by the waves, and deeply restorative island silence.
