Ker & Downey® Africa > Trips > South Africa Conservation Safari with the Tracker Academy
Interpreters of the wild, trackers are an essential part of a safari and conservation experience in Africa. The pioneering Tracker Academy based in South Africa was founded over 11 years ago and serves to restore the ancient art form of tracking by offering a formal qualification to youth from disadvantaged backgrounds in South Africa. Our 12-day Conservation Safari gives you an opportunity to leave a positive legacy in South Africa by actively partaking in conservation-management experiences alongside the students and graduates of this life-altering programme. Starting in the city of Cape Town, your conservation journey continues in Tswalu Kalahari, the latest Tracker Academy camp and concludes at Londolozi Private Game Reserve.
This trip includes a $100 donation on behalf of the client to the Tracker Academy.
Your South Africa safari starts on arrival at Cape Town International Airport. A Ker & Downey® Africa representative will await your arrival for your VIP private transfer to one of the most exclusive hotels in Cape Town, Ellerman House. Located in the affluent neighbourhood of Bantry Bay, Ellerman House boasts uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean and is the perfect base from which to explore the ‘Mother City’. During your stay, discover the rich culture and history of Cape Town on a full-day private city tour. Your dedicated guide will accompany you to the city’s most iconic sites including a scenic ride up Table Mountain by cable car, a walking tour of the colourful Cape Malay Quarter, Bo Kaap, Company Gardens, District 6, the V&A Waterfront and last but not least, Robben Island.
Ellerman House is located in one of Cape Town’s most exclusive seaside neighborhoods, Bantry Bay. The Cape Edwardian mansion overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and consists of 13 exclusive bedrooms, and two impressive villas. Guests who stay at Ellerman House can also enjoy the property’s private art gallery, wine cellar and spa.
Spend your days exploring the iconic city of Cape Town, followed by luxurious evenings admiring the hotel’s private contemporary South African art collection, sipping on a 20-year-old brandy at the hotel’s brandy lounge, or selecting wine from a collection of over 7500 bottles to pair with your dinner at the wine gallery.
After a fresh breakfast overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, your driver will meet you and accompany you to the Execujet Hangar at Cape Town International Airport. From here, you will board a scheduled service flight to Tswalu Kalahari’s private airstrip, a mere two-hour flight away. On touch down, you will meet your dedicated guide who will transfer you to The Motse, one of two luxury lodges located on the private reserve. Tswalu Kalahari is a pioneer in African conservation and the Tswalu Foundation exists primarily to support ecological research on the reserve. You will have the opportunity to visit the Academy and join research efforts, as well as participate in conservation-management experiences during your stay. Your tracker will play a pivotal role in locating some of the most elusive species in Africa including the pangolin and Aardvark.
Located in Tswalu Kalahari, The Motse features just nine luxurious suites, each fitted with a private deck, star-bed and open fireplace. Guests who stay at The Motse can enjoy the lodge’s outdoor swimming pool, spa, gym and photographic studio, as well as wine cellar, National Geographic library and gallery.
The Motse offers a completely private experience to its guests leaving you to design your day according to your mood. Join the conservation-management activities with the Tswalu Foundation and enjoy private game drives and bush walks alongside your dedicated guide and tracker, meerkat encounters and horseback safaris.
After breakfast in the heart of the Kalahari, your dedicated guide will transfer you to Tswalu’s private airstrip for your onward flight to Skukuza Airport via OR Tambo International Airport. On touch down, a lodge representative will be ready to accompany you to Londolozi Varty Camp located in the central region of Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve. Varty Camp is the original Londolozi camp and is considered the heart and soul of the reserve. The premier base camp of the Tracker Academy, your time at Londolozi will include thrilling Big 5 encounters and wildlife conservation experiences alongside your expert guide and tracker. After days out on the reserve, you can visit the local village, unwind at Londolozi’s Healing House or join a restorative yoga class before savoring culinary delights by the fireside.
The heart of Londolozi, the authentic Varty Camp features only 10 thatched salas each fitted with a private pool and elevated deck overlooking the riverine bush. Guests who stay at Varty Camp can enjoy the camp’s fitness center, spa, photographic studio, lifestyle boutique and yoga studio.
Discover one of South Africa’s original private game reserves on twice-daily game drives, photographic safaris, guided bush walks and tracking experiences alongside graduates of the Tracker Academy. Other activities include daily yoga classes and spa experiences, and local village visits.
