Ker & Downey® Africa > Trips > Botswana Birding Safari
A birder’s paradise, Botswana is home to over 600 recorded bird species. This stellar itinerary has been crafted for both novice and experienced birders, transporting twitchers to some of Botswana’s premier birding destinations – Chobe National Park, Moremi Game Reserve and the Okavango Delta. The itinerary pairs exclusive camps immersed in nature with world-class land- and water-based birding safari experiences including a mokoro safari in a glass bottom canoe, sunset river cruises, bird watching from a private safari hide and a breathtaking helicopter flight over the Okavango Delta.
Your adventure begins on arrival at Kasane International Airport, where a Ker & Downey® Africa representative will meet you and accompany you to Camp Kuzuma. This luxury lodge is located on the border of Botswana’s famed Chobe National Park and is home to 450 bird species including the Meyer’s parrot and the Pel’s fishing-owl – making it the perfect first stop for your birding safari in Botswana. Situated under a canopy of Mopane trees, your spacious tented suite offers views of a floodlit watering hotel for a 24/7 safari experience. Your time here can be enjoyed exploring Chobe on day and night game drives, guided walking safaris, and sunset river cruises where you can witness the park’s thriving birdlife on the riverbanks. In the evening, you can look forward to dinner under the stars at the camp’s boma made using fresh produce from the lodge followed by a nightcap at the bar.
This exclusive camp is situated in the pristine Kazuma Forest Reserve, on the border of wildlife haven Chobe National Park. The camp features 7 spacious tents each fitted with a private deck that overlooks the active waterhole. Guests can also enjoy the camp’s spa and pool.
Today you will return to Kasane Airport for your scheduled light aircraft flight to Moremi Game Reserve. On touch down, a lodge representative will welcome you and accompany you to Khwai River Lodge – an historical lodge famed for being one of the first lodges to promote safaris with a conservation ethos. Located in the heart of the Okavango Delta, this lodge is a birder’s paradise and gives you access to over 400 bird species including the Wattled Crane, Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill and Meves’s Starling. Enjoy the drama of the wild on day and night game drives in Moremi Game Reserve, at the lodge’s private hide, as well as an epic 35 minute scenic helicopter flight over the Delta’s patchwork of verdant islands and lagoons. After exhilarating days you can unwind at the lodge’s 20 meter outdoor pool, get active at the fitness center, or enjoy a rejuvenating treatment at the spa. As the evening descends, head out to Mothupi’s Boma where you can tuck into a feast of African dishes.
After a refreshing breakfast overlooking the banks of the Khwai River, your driver will meet you and transfer you to the local airstrip for your charter flight to the Okavango Delta. En route, be sure to glance out of your window for a breathtaking display of seasonal floodplains, riverine forest and verdant grasslands that make up this UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will be welcomed on arrival at Xigera Safari Lodge’s private airstrip, and transferred to one of the most opulent and exclusive lodges in the Delta. The lodge is situated in an International Birding Area (IBA) and delivers some of the best land- and water-based birding Botswana has to offer with more than 400 species recorded. Explore this birding paradise on daily game drives, traditional mokoro canoe safaris, guided bush walks and Zambezi river cruises in search of some of Botswana’s lesser known birds including Lesser jacana, Brown firefinch and African pygmy goose.
Located in a private concession in the Okavango Delta, Xigera Lodge features 12 spacious suites amid a breathtaking setting with interiors dedicated to celebrating African art and design. Guests can enjoy the lodge’s waterside lounge, stargazing boma and fire pit, spa, gym and swimming pool.
Guests can enjoy expertly guided morning and afternoon safaris in custom game drive vehicles, as well as glass-bottom mokoro and motorboat safaris on the Delta’s waterways. We recommend including a night in Xigera’s Baobab Treehouse for an incredible sleepout experience under the African night sky.
Today marks the final day of your Botswana Birding Safari. After a hearty breakfast in the Delta you will be accompanied to Xigera’s private airstrip for your charter flight to Maun and onward journey home.
