Odzala-Kokoua National Park

Located at the heart of the second-largest rainforest in the world, Odzala-Kokoua is home to some of the planet's most elusive and intriguing creatures, including western lowland gorillas and forest elephants. The park is currently under the management of the Odzala Foundation, a collaborative venture between African Parks and the government of the Republic of the Congo. African Parks stepped in to take over management in November 2010 and has since worked tirelessly to curb the rampant ivory and bushmeat poaching that threatens the region's wildlife.

By addressing the reason behind the poaching, rather than the brutal act itself, the new management team is slowly but surely succeeding in improving the lives of both the locals and animals that call the rainforest home. This includes a drive to recruit, train and deploy local eco-guards, providing mobile healthcare for surrounding communities, establishing gorilla programmes to boost tourism, and providing new income streams for residents by means of formal training from agricultural experts that teach them to grow cocoa.
