Travel like a pro

Travel Tips

One word comes to mind when people ask me how to get ready for travel in Africa – preparation. While we pride ourselves in being the ‘go-to’ for attention to detail, we do have a few tips that will keep your adventure on the up. Here’s how to travel like a pro in Africa.

Travel like a pro tips | 01 Attention is worth every penny

They say the devil is in the details but, with a little foresight, you don’t have to go to hell and back to iron them out. We believe in making dreams come true so the first thing you are going to want to list, are your wants. Be greedy now, we’re checking it twice. In the interest of preparation though, make lists on lists – seriously. Next, sign up for TSA PreCheck or Fastrack Global Entry, notify the bank of your departure, check the CDC for medical recommendations and GET QUALITY INSURANCE. Last but not least, prearrange your travel to and from your destination/airport. If you still find yourself with traveller’s paranoia, consult one of our travel agents.

Travel like a pro tips | 02 Don’t be turned off by the carry on

Yes you can use rolled belts to keep your collars crispy but unless you are planning a board meeting under a marula tree – get some safari shirts. One of the best weapons in the arsenal of a proactive traveller is packing like you’re off to the gym. Ok, maybe not that light but there is something to be said about the art of the carry on. Take a page out of the Masai Tribe’s wardrobe for ideas on how little one needs in the bush. Go from there. Seriously though make a list, ditch the guidebook and bring nothing that is going to distract you from the adventure ahead. You are not a tourist, you are an adventure avant-garde.

Tip 2: pack light

Travel like a pro tips | 03 Check your tech

Bring only what will magnify your African experience. Sure, you can bring your 9-foot DSLR with the same lens that Carl Zeiss used to photograph the moon landing. If you’re David Attenborough. If not, utilize the power of your phone. From photos to offline outdoor maps. Download Filo for airport WiFi, find airport wifi outlets and connecting gates or try Flysmart for reviews on terminal restaurants and shopping. There is even an app for the directionally special that gives GPS directions to your next gate (iFly).

Travel like a pro tips | 04 Beat the airport

We can all agree that airports are evil and being catapulted across the sky at 900 MPH is not only odd, it’s mildly traumatizing. However, even if we are just giant mice in a weird experiment devised by Elon Musk, comfort is key. Pamper yourself. Bring natural cooling face wipes, cucumber eye pads, face creams (in the right sizes) and black-out masks. Turn your trip into a wellness event. Ask your nutritionist about the upsides of intermittent fasting, pack a weighted blanket and research the gadgets championing the in-flight sleeping industry. You’re welcome.

Travel like a pro tips | 05 Arrive and thrive

So you’ve made it to Mama Africa. By now you should have taken it upon yourself to learn some key local words, if not for your entertainment, for your ease into the local culture. Get organized. We suggest that you prearrange travel to/from the airport with us to ensure a seamless experience. However, no matter how on point you are, you will no doubt be greeted by Mr International himself: Captain Jetlag. Ah the joys of timetravel. As hard as it sounds, aim to stay awake until the eve and get a solid night’s rest. Reset your internal clock – you’re going to need it.
