Lying in the azure waters of the warm Indian Ocean, off the eastern coast of Madagascar, is a rugged island that is the result of volcanic activity which began around five million years ago.

Water Activities Reunion Island

Much like Hawaii, this tropical island is located above a hotspot in the Earth’s crust and it was from here that lava erupted to form a huge cone and gradually, with successive eruptions and much erosion, became the island that is still evolving today.

The volcanic island was uninhabited, until the 16th century, when discovered by the Portuguese. It was later claimed by the French and to this day it remains a French colony. Since its inception, the French colony’s social fabric has been fused by centuries of immigration, creating the vibrant blend of Creole, African, Indian, Malay, Chinese and French that exists today in the casual multi-ethnic atmosphere. This has seemingly led to a wealth of cultural treasures, from architectural to historical sites, colourful religions to colonial buildings and lively festivals that epitomise what the unified island lifestyle is all about.
