Day 4: Gorilla Tracking / Volcanoes National Park / Virunga Lodge
Day 5: Departure
Day 1 / Arrive in Kigali, Hotel Des Mille Collines
Fly into Kigali Airport to begin your Rwanda Gorilla Tracking Expedition. Kigali is the capital city of Rwanda. A country with a unique and powerful history, and home to some of the most majestically powerful creatures that roam the planet – the Gorilla.
Situated geographically near the center of Rwanda, surrounded by undulating, livid-green hills, Kigali is both the geographical and metaphorical heart of Rwanda – making it the rightful passage into this country and its iconic wildlife.
You will be met at the airport and guided to your vehicle, at which point you will be transferred directly to your accommodation in Kigali, the strikingly beautiful Hotel Des Mille Collines.
The inspiration for the film Hotel Rwanda, Hotel Des Mille Collines and its manager at the time, Paul Rusesabagina, were a beacon of hope during Rwanda’s grim genocide and saved hundreds of Tutsi and Hutu lives.
Perched on the top floor of the iconic hotel is Kigali’s most famous restaurant, Le Panorama. The perfect spot, situated above the city with its unbroken views of the endless rolling hills, to deal with your suspensive nerves.
With an invigorating history below your feet, time seems to stand still and is irrelevant when gazing over the green palette of Rwanda’s hills from the 4th floor of Hotel Des Mille Collines.
Day 2 / Historical City Tour, Kigali
Connect with the grim past and learn about the bright future ahead of one of Africa’s most exciting and promising cities as you embark on an immersive tour of the history and culture of Kigali. Not necessarily for the faint hearted as Rwanda dealt with a gruelling genocide. However, it is utterly inspiring to bear witness to humankind’s resilience.
You will undoubtedly leave enriched with a strong impression of the people and land, formed through real, hands-on experiences.
You will be transferred from the city through hues of green to Virunga Lodge located in Volcanoes National Park, near the North-Western border of Rwanda, near the Congo. The two-hour drive will take you through winding roads and incredible landscapes.
Check into your suite at Virunga Lodge – a luxurious base camp that will be a welcome retreat after your days of tracking. A place to relax, re-energise and reflect on your encounters with the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda.
Day 3-4 / Gorilla Tracking, Volcanoes National Park
Spend these days trekking, tracking and tackling the seemingly impenetrable forest as you search for the Mountain Gorillas of Volcanoes National Park. With a trained expert guide, rickety rifle by his side, you will hike through the dense forest of Volcanoes National Park as he sniffs the air, scans the ground for clues and scours the canopy. Traverse over high hills, below branches, over creepers, and around steep and slippery volcano slopes as machete-wielding trackers clear your path in pursuit of one of the most epic experiences on earth – a face to face encounter with a Gorilla.
Embrace a new language as you are briefed on how to communicate with the gorillas. Shouting “stop”, heartbeat pounding whilst beads of sweat drip down your forehead, will not be very effective if a large silverback approaches you.
Once you and your guide have tracked down the Gorillas through the dense Volcanoes National Park jungle, you will be gifted a single hour with the Gorillas (per day). Being accepted by a wild and powerful family of gorillas is a moment you will never forget – it is the reason you explore the corners of the world.
Return to Virunga Lodge at the end of each day’s track. Your Adventure Travel Expert can also organise an exhibition of the traditional Intore Dance Performance at the lodge – the traditional ‘ballet’ of Rwanda that has been refined over centuries in the courts of the Rwandan kings and is yet another experience that will make a lasting impression for years to come.
Day 5 / Departure
After breakfast, you will bid farewell to Volcanoes National Park and exit the mountainous forest leaving behind the gorillas but taking with you something that only you will be able to describe. Take the road back to Kigali, stopping along the way to admire the scenery, for your onward journey.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY
“I’ve had the good fortune of traveling many times to most continents over the last 50 years. I use travel consultants about 1/2 of the time and plan trips myself the other half…Ker & Downey Africa (Terri-Ann in particular) planned and organized perhaps the best trip of our lives”
Phil Tague, United States
“We had an amazing two weeks in South Africa and we wanted to see as much as possible in the time. Ker & Downey provided an amazing schedule that allowed us to spend time in both Joburg and Cape Town as well as a 3 day safari some time in the winelands before venturing further along the Garden Route. I found the team at Ker & Downey very responsive and they took complete care of the schedule”
